Manchester City’s Erling Haaland shines in the FA Cup with five goals against Luton Town. Then coach Pep Guardiola replaces him. The goal-hungry Norwegian then sends a warning to the competition.

Erling Haaland almost single-handedly shot Manchester City into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. The Norwegian striker in the service of the English champions scored five goals in a 6:2 (3:1) win against Luton Town on Tuesday evening. Haaland scored a hat trick (3rd, 18th, 40th) in the first half, and he scored twice after substitution (55th, 58th).

Kevin De Bruyne also played well. The Belgian prepared the first four of Haaland’s five goals. Mateo Kovacic (72nd) ensured the final point, but the substitution of Jack Grealish due to injury dampened the mood. Jordan Clark scored for Luton Town (45th, 42nd).

Manchester coach Pep Guardiola took the eager Haaland off the field in the 77th minute – after all, the record for an FA Cup game was still a few goals away. This is still held today by the 77-year-old Scotsman Ted MacDougall, who scored nine goals in AFC Bournemouth’s 11-0 win against FC Margate on November 20, 1971.

Haaland still made history once again: He is the first player to score five or more goals in both a Champions League game and an FA Cup game. Last year he scored a five-pack against RB Leipzig in the round of 16 of the premier class.

Haaland leaves injury behind him

“I’m on the way back to my best,” said Haaland, who took the opportunity to threaten the competition in the Premiere League and the Champions League, in an interview after the game: “I finally feel good. It’s an incredible feeling. It’s coming, we’re coming. Exciting times lie ahead. We are ready to attack.”

With the five goals against Luton Town, Haaland has 27 competitive goals this season. The Norwegian striker only needed 30 games to achieve this. The 23-year-old attacker has scored 17 goals in the Premier League alone so far, putting him at the top of the top scorers list.

Coach Guardiola also sees Haaland on the way to his old strength. “What worried me was that Erling didn’t play for two months. He couldn’t walk, he couldn’t do anything, and when you lose your rhythm for two months, it’s not easy to get back. But he’s getting better with every game.”
