New allegations against Newcastle professional: Sandro Tonali again accused of betting violations

As of: March 28, 2024 4:59 p.m

Italian international Sandro Tonali has been charged again over alleged illegal betting.

As the English Football Association FA announced on Thursday (March 28, 2024), the currently suspended midfielder from Premier League club Newcastle United is said to have violated the FA betting rules and bet a total of 50 times between August 12th and October 12th, 2023 placed on football games. The 23-year-old Tonali has until April 5th to respond to the allegations.

Committed to eight months of therapy

Since last October, Tonali has been serving a ten-month ban from the Italian football association FIGC because of his involvement in a betting scandal, and he also had to undergo therapy for eight months. If Tonali is convicted again in England, things could get even worse.

Tonali admitted that he had also bet on his own team’s games during his time at AC Milan. His lawyer said at the time that he was addicted to gambling. The Italian only moved to England last summer for more than 63 million euros.

“Sandro retains the support of the club”

Newcastle United acknowledged the charges against Tonali “in connection with alleged breaches of the FA betting rules,” the club said in a statement on Thursday: “Sandro continues to fully comply with the relevant investigations and retains the full support of the club.”

Due to the ongoing process, there will be no further comments from the club or Tonali for the time being, it said.
