The Kansas City Royals have added Venezuelan catcher Sandy León to their roster with a minor league deal. The 34-year-old will be in Kansas City’s camp for the next month, although he has not received an invitation to the big team’s roster.
León appeared in 21 games last year with the Texas Rangers, where he went 6-for-41 at the plate before being designated for assignment in June. Following his time with the Rangers, he signed a minor league deal with Cleveland and spent the rest of the season in the Guardians’ Triple-A affiliate.
With compatriots Salvador Pérez and Freddy Fermín already on the Kansas City roster, León may face some competition for a spot on the team. However, the veteran presence he brings could be beneficial to the Royals’ depth.
It remains to be seen if León will secure a spot on the big team’s roster, but his experience and skills could make a valuable contribution to the team.
