Liquid Cooling in data centers, BCS reveals the potential

Luca D’Alleva, Senior Consultant of BCS Italia, highlights the potential impact of Liquid Cooling in the growth of data centers on the Italian market.

In recent years, in order to reduce consumption and costs and following the new green demands and the increase in energy prices due to the well-known regional conflicts, the demand for Liquid Cooling systems in the data center sector has increased significantly.

This exponential growth, favored by the continuous demand for new data centers especially in Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific and China, has led to the development of new technologies that will allow savings in terms of energy consumption and costs, contributing, at the same time, to encourage an increase in revenue. According to an analysis by AsdReportsin fact, the value of the market in 2023 was around 4.5 billion dollars with the forecast of reaching 40 billion by 2033, highlighting a Cagr by 24.53% in the decade examined.

In terms of costs in the very short term, the development and implementation of Liquid Cooling technology obviously has a greater impact than traditional solutions integrated into data centers today. There are, however, numerous immediate advantages which, with relatively simple modifications, could favor its adoption: from the notable reduction in electrical faults and heat emissions, up to the achievement of gains in terms of efficiency (up to 40% on cooling costs and electricity consumption).

What could be the impact for Italy?

According to data from a research conducted by CloudScene in 2021, our country was not among the main states – including the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany to name a few – that had made significant investments in the sector. To date, however, the situation has changed. Currently, estimates indicate, in fact, that Italy is one of the main players in this field, with a strong demand for energy from developer for the development of increasingly larger structures. This could lead us to become a reference market in Europe, with Liquid Cooling set to have a significant impact here too, especially in the Milan area, thanks to the adoption of cutting-edge cooling solutions.
