Samsung’s Immersive Team to Develop Virtual Vision Headsets to Compete with Apple
In a move to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro virtual vision headset, Samsung has established an independent unit called the Immersive Team. According to the Korea Economic Daily, the team will focus on creating products that can rival Apple’s offering.
The new product is said to be using Qualcomm’s processor products, and may feature the new Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor announced by Qualcomm earlier this year. The Immersive Team will be affiliated with the MX mobile experience department at Samsung and currently consists of around 100 people. There are plans to expand the team to strengthen the development layout of XR virtual vision head-mounted devices.
Samsung has been involved in the virtual vision application market early on, with collaborations with Meta (then known as Facebook) to run Gear VR on mobile phones, as well as with Microsoft to develop HMD Odyssey and other devices for Windows platforms. However, due to the lack of successful promotion of virtual vision technology in the application market, Samsung had suspended the development of virtual vision applications.
With the continued development of Meta’s Quest series models and Apple’s plans to enter the virtual vision head-mounted device market, Samsung has announced an in-depth cooperation with Qualcomm in early 2023 to once again lay out the virtual vision application market. The move is seen as Samsung’s attempt to stay ahead in the market and not lag behind its competitors.
