The potential of AI for Italian businesses: 329 billion euros by 2030

For the second year, Amazon Web Services conducted the research Unlocking Europe’s AI Potentialwhich analyzes the level of digital transformation across Europe in relation to the objectives of the European Digital Decade, the program developed by the EU to make Europe a digital leader by 2030. The research predictably reveals how 2023 has been the year of AI, with a 28% increase in the number of companies adopting artificial intelligence in Italy and by 32% in Europe compared to 2022. Although AI adoption in Italy is less strong than in the rest of Europe, Italian businesses that have implemented it have witnessed significant benefits, including greater efficiency and corporate innovation. In fact, if Italy can maintain this level of digital integration until 2030, it could grow the economy by 329 billion euros, 78 billion euros more than forecast last year.

The study analyzes different aspects of digital adoption in Italy, including:

The growing potential of digital technologies – Italian businesses are enthusiastically embracing digital technologies at an even faster pace than other European countries. (93% of companies express a strong daily dependence on digital technology, a figure that significantly exceeds the average of 79% of European companies)
The explosion of AI – Una a significant majority (67%) of Italian companies believe that AI will substantially transform their sector in the next five years, above the European average (63%)
The dangers of AI – 75% of Italian citizens declare a certain level of concern regarding the development of AI. Much of this fear is due to the fact that this technology could cause job losses, an issue that worries 48% of citizens
The role of Cloud computing – Cloud computing represents the starting point on Europe’s path to becoming a digital leader and forms the basis for the adoption of digital and AI technologies. However, greater awareness of the advantages of cloud technology is necessary, since, in Italy, familiarity with the cloud is weaker than in the rest of Europe, where only 29% of companies believe they have a strong awareness of it, compared to 39% across Europe.
The obstacles to digital adoption – Finding staff with good digital skills remains a challenge in Italy, and only a small minority (19%) consider it a simple task. Furthermore, rigorous standards for data exchange between AI providers prevent Italian businesses from fully accessing the benefits of a digital future.
