No conference on Palestine con Jean-Luc Mélenchon. L’University of Lille he decided to to forbid the event scheduled for Thursday by the leader of Insoumise France and the Franco-Palestinian militant Rima Hassan. Another decision in Europe against dissent: like the recent choice of Germania to ban the former Greek minister Varoufakis to enter for a conference – broken up by the police – also on Palestine.
The university in northern France said it had made the decision because “there are no longer the conditions to guarantee the serenity of the debate” due to the “worrying” increase in international tensions after “the military escalation of 13 and 14 April in the Middle East”. The conference was organized by the pro-Palestinian student association “Libre Palestine” and the local right-wing politicians of the Gathering Nationalas well as i Republicans and the Macronian majority of Renaissance.
“It is an excuse not to talk about the underlying issues and which allows us to look away from what could be the first genocide of the 21st century”, commented the group leader of La France Inoumise in the Assemblée Nationale, Mathilde Panot. Before the university’s decision, the leader of the Socialist Party in the European elections, Raphaël Glucksmannhad expressed regret at the fact that Mélenchon “showed himself” with the logo of an association “that denies the existence of the State of Israel” to announce the conference that was supposed to be held in Lille. On Tf1, Glucksmann stated that “when you are part of a political party you don’t go around with a logo that denies the existence of the State of Israel. It’s very simple.”
No university classrooms but the conference will still be held “in a other place” from Lille: “We will not be silent“, assured the organizers of the event with Mélenchon and Hassan. “Members will be sent notification of a new location”, reads a note released by Lfi, in which the finger is pointed at “the university presidency visibly unable to resist pressure that affect the freedom of expression”.
In France already on 12 October, a few days after the Hamas massacre and the start of the Israeli bombings on the Strip, the interior minister Gerald Darmanin he ordered an absolute ban on demonstrations in favor of Palestine, because “they could generate public disorder”.
