In March and April 2024, 106 regional electricity suppliers will increase their prices.

EWE and Yello customers in particular are affected. Prices are expected to rise by an average of eight percent.

The main reason for this is the federal government’s subsidy for network fees, which was canceled due to the budget crisis.

Although price cuts for electricity and gas consumers were announced at the beginning of 2024, some electricity providers want to increase their electricity prices in March and April. The customers of 106 regional suppliers are affected, Verivox evaluates.

The electricity prices of 106 providers are becoming more expensive

Next March and April, electricity prices from 106 suppliers are expected to rise by an average of eight percent. This emerges from a list from the comparison portal Verivox, which is available exclusively to Business Insider. It lists 125 electricity providers who want to make price changes in the coming months – both price increases and price decreases.

Of the 106 electricity suppliers that announced rising prices, 87 changes will come into force from March 2024, while the remaining 19 will not apply until April. Customers of the affected electricity providers have to pay an average of 171.8 euros more.

But 19 electricity providers plan to reduce their tariff prices. Consumers can save a total of 10.6 percent, or 225 euros.

The price increases hit customers of the energy supply companies WSW Energie & Wasser AG and Stadtwerke Kelheim GmbH & Co. KG the hardest.

WSW Energie & Wasser AG in North Rhine-Westphalia will also increase the costs of the basic supply tariff by 15.6 percent from March 2024. This means that the costs for a household with an annual consumption of 4,000 kilowatt hours increase by 267 euros.

In Bavaria, customers of Stadtwerke Kelheim GmbH & Co. KG should be prepared for a price increase of 9.8 percent. It also affects the basic tariff and the change will come into force in March 2024.

There are several reasons for the price increases. Due to the budget crisis at the end of 2023, for example, the federal government’s subsidy for network fees for energy suppliers will no longer apply. There is no prospect of a replacement for it. This outage led to a doubling of network fees – from 3.1 cents to 6.4 cents per kilowatt hour – explains the “Bild”. Other reasons include high procurement costs in recent years, government levies, levies and taxes.

But: 19 electricity suppliers are reducing their prices

Consumers of the electricity provider Stadtwerke Pappenheim in Bavaria can be particularly happy. The basic service tariff will cost a full 39.4 percent less from March 2024. For households with an annual consumption of 4,000 kilowatt hours, this means a price reduction of 984 euros.

From March 2024, customers of the basic tariff of Stadtwerke Borken/Westfalen GmbH will pay 23.2 percent less. With an annual consumption of 4,000 kilowatt hours, households can save 562 euros per year.
