Salehpour points out that according to Boeing documents, gaps between fuselage parts that are greater than 0.005 inches (0.127 millimeters) must be closed. He claims that on more than 1,000 787 aircraft, the major gaps were not closed in two places. Boeing often points out that 0.005 inches is just the thickness of a human hair, he told the Senate Investigations Subcommittee. But in flight, even an error of this magnitude “can be a question of life and death,” emphasized Salehpour on Wednesday.
