He added: “You’re not ready for what (director James Cameron) is doing.”
Regarding the long gap between sequels, Asbell said he wasn’t concerned, in part because Disney’s marketing was so strong.
“I can tell you there’s no better marketing tool in this industry than Disney. They’ll do an incredible job rekindling the passion for original films,” Asbell said.
The executive also mentioned that Avatar 2 isn’t just a sequel — it’s part of a saga that will continue in the future, with multiple additional sequels to follow.
“It’s compelling on its own, but it’s also going to be very compelling to go back to these characters and see how they evolve. It’s not about Avatar being a really big movie, it’s about how Avatar became A very important cultural moment for the audience. I don’t think it’s hard to convince people to come back.”
The executive also stressed that Avatar 2 will not be delayed. It’s set to hit theaters on December 22, and it definitely won’t change, he said.
The original cast returns for the sequel, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver, as well as new cast members such as Kate Winslet.
In addition to Avatar 2, Ubisoft will release its new Avatar video game, Pandora’s Frontier, later this year, which will be produced by The Division’s development team.
