But I thought that this is my way – an actor’s way – to rebel against war: to convey the idea that a little time to distract and forget is still possible. And to have fun, after two years of pandemic and now the threat of a war on our doorstep, there is so much need … This is the beauty of the work of us artists: with our art and culture we can lighten our heart and that of others. Culture elevates. They had brought Putin to the cinema more often … (Or maybe they brought him there and chose the wrong character?) ». Giulia Bevilacqua is decidedly disconsolate and torn: the general context weighs, but for her the moment is beautiful, intense and rewarding, with two small children who fill her with joy and the work is going well. Never worked as hard as after the birth of little Edoardo in May 2020 and the end of the first wave of the pandemic. In “Stronger than Destiny”, a 4-part period drama directed by Alexis Sweet, she is a harassed mother who rebels. How did you find yourself, who is more used to comedy?
«Melodrama is beautiful, but dangerous: there is always the risk of going beyond the lines. It is the clothes themselves that lead you to be unnatural. But my character is beautiful: he rebels against a condition that, at the end of the 19th century, by law he wanted her to be subject to her husband, owned by her and without rights. She wants to leave her tyrant, but he threatens to take her daughter away from her forever. The case of a terrible fire with many victims, especially women, will make her study a diabolical plan, triggered precisely by that blackmail ».
In short, today the law is different but men are always the same, or not?
“In fiction, the stories of three women who fight and make it are told. They can be a model for the present. Women continue to be victims: despite years of struggle, the patriarchal mentality survives. And we must continue to fight ».
For a child, a woman is ready for anything. Isn’t that exactly what we see in pictures from Ukraine every day? Women hugging children, squeezing their little hands, hiding their tears, advancing in the snow, fleeing in despair, lying on the ground … Would you have ever thought that in the 21st century, a few hundred kilometers from Italy, this could happen ?
“We never wanted to see them. They are indelible images, an agony that will never leave us. We cannot stand still and watch. I try to help at least economically, I think it is our duty. I support some non-profit organizations, including “Every Child Is My Child” created by my friend Anna Folgietta, whose foundation I also participated in, which helps children. I participate in the collection of basic necessities – clothes, blankets, medicines, food – that are being made in my daughter’s school. There is a mother from Kiev: she lives and works here with the youngest child; another three live with her husband in Ukraine. The oldest, eighteen, immediately enlisted. She is desperate. She would have liked to join them, they did not want to ».
Every day new photos, more and more distressing, generate strong emotions. Isn’t it that today’s image makes us forget that of yesterday, in a kind of escalation? First it was the child lying on the Turkish shore, then the one handed over to the soldier over the barbed wire … Already forgotten?
“You always think you’ve seen the worst, then there’s a new horror coming up. Not worse, just an endless repetition of it. War can only generate these images. The only thing is to ban it forever. Although it is disheartening to see that the 21st century has learned nothing from the events of the previous century. The good thing is that this time a wave of solidarity has been generated throughout Europe like never before ».
