Abb: “Formula E fundamental for innovation”

“Our partnership with Formula E brings together two great teams that are pushing the boundaries of technology to support the shift to electric mobility. This championship is a showcase for the most advanced e-mobility technologies in the world. And this partnership, now in the its fourth season, allows us to use this competitive racing environment as a test bed to further develop our technology, demonstrating the benefits of electric mobility to a global audience. Ultimately, it is helping us drive progress towards a more sustainable future. “: this is how Bjorn Rosengren, CEO Abb explains his company’s commitment to the FE, an enormous commitment since the company is the main sponsor and since the official name of the series is” L’Abb Fia Formula E World Championship “.

How a Formula E is made and how it goes

To see firsthand “how they work at Abb” we had the opportunity to see their plant in Frosinone up close, a production piece of a world-leading giant in the electrification, robotics, automation and movement sector: they have more than 130 years of history and 105,000 employees in over 100 countries.

Hence the excellence shown with pride by the Frosinone factory: zero waste in landfills, 14 years ahead of the European Union’s target. And a record level of automation.

Inaugurated in 1969, the Frosinone plant represents an ABB center of excellence for the development and production of low voltage circuit breakers. The 150,000 square meters with 800 employees is highly automated and produces more than three million pieces annually. After the pandemic, then, the unstoppable march of robots continues in new sectors such as logistics and retail, also accelerating the production of electric vehicles.
And the adoption of robots fuels the demand for new skills that require specific education and training.

Frosinone is not the only production site in Italy: there is that of Dalmine (Bergamo) and Santa Palomba (Rome), where medium and low voltage switches are produced in Italy, they are recognized as Lighthouse Plant for their commitment digital as part of a plan of the ministry of economic development.

On the electrification front, Abb offers a broad portfolio of products, digital digital solutions and services, from the substation to the socket to the power socket, enabling safe, intelligent and sustainable electrification. Hence, as we said, the commitment in Formula E. The offers include digital innovations and related innovations for low and medium voltage, including EV infrastructure, modular substations substations, automation distribution, power protection, accessory wiring, electrical panels , enclosures, wiring, sensing and control.
