AI improves lung cancer diagnosis – Medicine

Artificial intelligence software to make early diagnosis of lung cancer more effective and efficient. It is called ‘Deep Lung’ and is a program based on deep learning algorithms developed by the Catalan foundation Eurecat to monitor, on the basis of lung CT scans taken on patients, for example those undergoing screening, suspicious nodules and evaluate their changes , to detect any malignancy with greater accuracy and in a shorter time, and thus contribute to the timely diagnosis of the tumor.

Thanks to an agreement signed between the Emilia-Romagna Region, the Eurecat Foundation and the Irccs Policlinico di Sant’Orsola, the software will be tested in Bologna and at the University Clinic of Barcelona starting from June, to determine the impact that the program could have on the process of early diagnosis and screening of lung cancer, with consequent benefits for the protection of patients’ health.

The objective, at the end of the experimentation, is to establish an innovative and free service, available to all public healthcare facilities in Emilia-Romagna. The necessary computing capacity will be offered, free of charge, by the Margherita supercomputer, which the Region acquired with a loan of 3.5 million euros from the Fund for Development and Cohesion (FSC), with the aim of allowing public administrations and local healthcare companies to make use of the potential of new technologies.

“Early diagnosis and timely treatment are fundamental in oncology, because they can save lives – underline the councilors for Health Policies, Raffaele Donini, and for European Cooperation, Paolo Calvano – In this respect, artificial intelligence and the analysis of Big Data can represent a valuable support for diagnostic activities, to make clinical decisions increasingly precise and timely and contribute to improving patient health outcomes.”
