Covid, is the pandemic over? The situation in hospitals compared to a year ago

In the last few hours, no significant changes have been observed in the number of beds occupied in intensive care by Covid patients. This figure, if compared with that of a year ago, shows, however, that we are really coming out of the fourth wave of Covid, the one led by the highly contagious but less deadly variant Omicron. In fact, there are only three regions in Italy that still record an increase in the employment rate of intensive care, while only Sardinia and Lazio exceed the alert threshold.

Even in Sicily there are comforting signs from the latest bulletin, with 3,450 new cases of Coronavirus and a positive rate of 9%, a sharp decline compared to 13% on Tuesday. In the hospital there are 1,006 patients admitted to ordinary wards (-33), while in intensive care – where no new admissions are registered – there are 65 patients (-7).

According to the monitoring data of the National Agency for Regional Health Services (Agenas), updated as of March 1, 2022, in Italy the percentage of occupancy of beds in non-critical areas by Covid patients has dropped by one percentage point in 24 hours. while that relating to intensive care has remained virtually unchanged. In particular, the employment rate of intensive care units remained steady at 7% while that of the other departments rose to 16%. Comparing these data with the same ones recorded a year ago, a notable difference can be observed, fortunately for the better. The data of March 1, 2021, in fact, revealed an employment rate of intensive care at 25% and that in the non-critical area at 30%.

The situation varies from region to region, with the occupancy rate of ICU beds growing in Abruzzo (to 9%), Basilicata (4%) and Puglia (7%). The employment rate, on the other hand, is decreasing in 6 regions and autonomous provinces: Calabria (8%), Emilia Romagna (7%), Lazio (12%), Marche (9%), Pa Bolzano (1%) , Pa Trento (4%). The situation remains stable in: Sicily (8%), Campania (6%), Friuli Venezia Giulia (9%), Liguria (8%), Lombardy (5%), Molise (5%), Piedmont (6%), Sardinia (13%), Tuscany (9%), Umbria (7%), Valle d’Aosta (9%) and Veneto (5%). On the national territory, only Sardinia and Lazio still exceed the alert threshold for employment in intensive care, set at 10%.

Looking at the situation in the non-critical area, on a daily level the percentage of places occupied by Covid patients in hospital wards grows only in Campania (17%) and Molise (15%), while it drops in 13 regions: Sicily (27%), Abruzzo (26%), Basilicata (25%), Calabria (25%), Emilia Romagna (15%), Friuli Venezia Giulia (16%), Lazio (21%), Marche (19%), Pa Trento ( 9%), Sardinia (19%), Sicily (27%), Umbria (23%), Valle d’Aosta (12%) and Veneto (9%). Stable in Liguria (20%), Lombardy (10%), Bolzano (14%), Piedmont (14%), Puglia (20%), Tuscany (16%). 13 regions remain above the alert threshold, set at 15%: Sicily, Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Liguria, Marche, Puglia, Sardinia, Tuscany, Umbria.
