FDA Study Shows Many Drugs Remain Effective Months, Even Years After Expiration Date
A study conducted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revealed that the expiration date on drug packaging is often just a guideline, with many medicines remaining effective even months or years after the supposed “limit.” According to the FDA, as many as 95% of drugs can still be effective one year after their expiration date, and in 25% of cases, their effectiveness remains valid even beyond four years.
However, it’s important to exercise caution when it comes to expired medications. While the expiration date indicates the guaranteed stability of the drug, there are certain types of medicines that must be taken within the date written on the package. These include anticonvulsants, anticoagulants, thyroid hormones, contraceptives, theophylline, as well as liquid medications such as syrups, eye drops, and injectable vials, as they are less stable and more perishable.
In a majority of cases, pills, lozenges, capsules, and tablets have fewer lasting problems and can maintain their effects even after four years. For example, acetylsalicylic acid, which makes up aspirin, retains its properties even after 10 years. However, proper storage is crucial to maintaining the effectiveness of medications, such as storing them in a cool and dry place at a temperature below 25°C, away from heat sources, direct exposure to sunlight, and humidity.
It’s important to note that the study emphasizes the importance of responsible medication use, as using expired medications, particularly those that are less stable and more perishable, can pose serious health risks, including anaphylactic shock. Patients are advised to consult healthcare professionals before using any expired medications and to carefully read all label instructions.
The findings of the FDA study have called into question the common practice of discarding medications immediately after their expiration date and have sparked dialogue regarding the potential for reducing waste and promoting sustainable use of healthcare resources.
