Italy Declares Fight Against Fentanyl: National Prevention Plan Launched

The Italian government has declared a fight against Fentanyl, a dangerous opioid that is causing devastation in the United States and making its way into Europe. Undersecretary to the Prime Minister Alfredo Mantovano presented the “National prevention plan against the improper use of Fentanyl and other synthetic opiates,” which was approved in the Council of Ministers on March 11.

The move is seen as a preventive measure to avoid an epidemic similar to the one currently underway in the USA. Prime Minister Meloni emphasized that the fight against drugs and addictions is a top priority for the government.

The Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci highlighted the dangers of Fentanyl, describing it as a “danger for the protection of public health.” The plan includes strengthening monitoring, NAS checks, and controls to prevent theft of the drug.

Mantovano warned about the effects of Fentanyl, calling it a drug that transforms users into “walking monsters.” He also pointed out the interest of organized crime, particularly the ‘Ndrangheta, in trafficking the drug.

The government’s prevention plan focuses on educating young people about the dangers of Fentanyl, with Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara stressing the need for schools to play a role in prevention. The plan also includes training for teachers and increased awareness among families.

Critics, however, have raised concerns about the government’s approach to the issue. +Europa Secretary Riccardo Magi criticized the government for inviting lobbyists with ties to pharmaceutical companies known for producing Fentanyl.

Overall, the government’s plan aims to prevent the spread of Fentanyl in Italy and protect public health from the devastating effects of the drug. By implementing preventive measures and raising awareness, the government hopes to address the issue before it becomes a major crisis in the country.
