Innovative startups rise to over 13 thousand. But financial indicators worsen

by admin

The usual quarterly report prepared by the Mise in collaboration with InfoCamere and the Chambers of Commerce does not show particular differences compared to the previous edition, which records numbers and trends of the companies registered in the appropriate section of the Business Register. In absolute values, the updated data at the end of June confirms the (slow but constant) growth trend of the population of innovative startups: 13,582 those registered, 8.1% more than the final balance at the end of March and 3.6 % of all corporations established less than five years ago.

Lombardy and Milan the locomotives

The indicators relating to territorial distribution confirm that the beating heart of the innovation ecosystem is Lombardy and the province of Milan in particular. In fact, over a quarter of all Italian startups surveyed are active in the Region (26.7% to be precise) and in the area of the capital there are 2,545, and therefore 18.7% of the Italian total, more than any other Region. In the supporting positions, once again, Lazio with 1,586 companies (of which 1,411 located in Rome), Campania, with 1,205 and Veneto with 1,095. Compared to the past, Emilia Romagna enters the ranking of Regions with more than a thousand innovative companies registered in the Register, with 1,071. The Italian record in terms of higher density of startups over the total of newly established joint-stock companies goes once again to Trentino-Alto Adige, with a percentage of 6%.

The number of members increases, the overall turnover decreases

Compared to the previous quarter, the share capital of innovative companies increased significantly (by 9.5%), reaching 65,000 but once again female businesses are not represented, which are 12.9% of the total, while startups founded by people under 35 are 18.1%. In the item turnover, historically the most out of tune that emerges from the report, the summary data (the financial statements currently available are relative to 2019 and cover 55% of the startups registered on 1 July 2021) confirms an average level of production which remains modest , and precisely 171 thousand euros, 11 thousand euros less than the figure at the end of March. The overall turnover developed by innovative companies falls, even if by very little (about 10 million euros), which settles at just under 1, 3 billion, confirming the fact that the majority of registered startups are still in an embryonic stage of development and that the ecosystem is struggling to scale up to a higher revenue scale. Finally, a final figure in the name of continuity is that of total operating income, which for 2019 is negative for 108.3 million euros, about 10 million more than three months ago.
