This week, the National Council of Higher Education (Cones) has temporarily suspended the authorization of new Medical Sciences courses, a decision that has been met with criticism by Colorado Senator Gustavo Leite. The resolution was approved by Cones during its ordinary session, with plans to further analyze the specific points in the next session.
Senator Gustavo Leite, a former Minister of Industry, deemed the decision a failure on the part of Cones and the National Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation of Higher Education (Aneaes). He argued that there was a lack of control over self-regulation in the approval process for new careers in the health area, resulting in the suspension of eight new courses.
Leite proposed the development of conditions and hospitals with suitable facilities for each university to ensure efficient operation of these programs. He emphasized the need for compliance with regulations to prevent the closure of opportunities in the market for the benefit of mediocre individuals.
The senator expressed concerns about the missed opportunities for Paraguay, suggesting that the country could have a larger number of high-level students and multiple university cities similar to the United States. He urged a fight against decisions that limit opportunities while advocating for freedom in education.
