German Statutory Accident Insurance (DGUV)

Berlin (ots)

Regarding today’s discussion of the cannabis law in the Federal Council, the general manager of the umbrella association of professional associations and accident insurance funds, German Statutory Accident Insurance (DGUV), Dr. Stefan Hussy:

“The Cannabis Act will come into force. For the world of work and educational institutions, professional associations and accident insurance funds remain in their position: Cannabis – just like alcohol and other drugs – must have no place here.

For us as statutory accident insurance, safety and health in educational institutions are particularly important. For this reason, we consider two points to be fundamental in protecting children and young people: Providing cannabis to minors is and remains a criminal offense. Public consumption in the immediate vicinity of schools, children’s and youth facilities, playgrounds and public sports facilities is not tolerated and remains prohibited.

The law does not prohibit the use of cannabis in the workplace. However, the occupational safety regulations oblige employees not to use intoxicants to put themselves in a state in which they could endanger themselves and others. In order to provide clarity, professional associations and accident insurance funds recommend that employers prohibit the consumption of cannabis in the workplace through work instructions or company agreements. Statutory accident insurance supports companies and institutions with its offers in questions of corporate addiction prevention.”
