The transfusion medicine of Belluno is at the forefront. And it is, in particular, on the use of blood components for regenerative purposes.
A use that was born in 1998, when a maxillofacial surgeon, RE Marx, applied autologous platelet-rich plasma to stimulate the regeneration of the mandibular bone, so as to induce a tissue regenerative stimulus by exploiting the “growth factors” contained in the platelets.
As early as 1999, the Belluno department was among the first to introduce the use of these blood components for the treatment of chronic skin ulcers, while in the last ten years 3,178 patients have been treated for 11,405 applications, 78% afferent to the disease. orthopedic, for 18% to skin pathology and 4% to corneal pathology.
Not only that: from 2012 to today the interest aroused in the scientific and clinical environments of the new method has made it possible to expand the fields of application in human pathology and, due to the skills acquired, the Transfusional of Belluno has been involved in the drafting of the guidelines and the legislation that regulates the use of these new blood components at a regional level.
Thanks to the experience acquired and the innovative choices, various academic institutions and associations have collaborated with the Belluno area to deepen the potential of the new method and the characteristics of the leuko-fibrin-platelet membrane. The collaboration with the Tes Foundation (Tissue Engineering and Signaling) and the University of Padua, active since 2013 and supported by the ABVS, was fundamental, which allowed to characterize and define in detail the operating mechanisms of the membrane.
