«Zaccaria wanted to stop him and was run over»

A 19-year-old boy, Zaccaria Belatik, died when he was hit by an ATB bus in front of the Bergamo station. It happened this morning (February 18) at 8.40. According to initial investigations by local police officers, the young man, of Moroccan origins but born in Italy, threw himself towards the bus, which was traveling in the direction of Via Bono, from the side of the train station. He was running, dragging a scooter. The 55-year-old driver found him to the right of him and didn’t have time to see him and brake: he dragged him for a few meters just before the roundabout between the Teb stop and the Autolinee. Despite attempts by the 118 doctors to resuscitate him, the boy did not make it.

The friend: «He wanted to stop the bus»

Zaccaria, who lived in the hamlet of Grignano, in Brembate, was with two other friends. «We were stopped at the Teb station because we wanted to go to Borgo Palazzo to have breakfast – says one of them, Yassine Oliym, 17 years old -. He was on the scooter. We were ten minutes away from the tram and so, when we saw that bus, the 8th, we decided to take it to take less time. Our friend was on the scooter, we were on foot. I don’t know if the driver didn’t see him, maybe he was looking the other way to see if anyone was coming from the roundabout. We reached him and what happened happened.”

The friend’s escape in shock

One of the two friends who were with the 19-year-old, in shock, ran away and was tracked down shortly afterwards by the police, to be heard as a witness: «They were like brothers, always together – adds Yassine Oliym -. When he saw that he was dead, he started crying. He was afraid because he didn’t have the documents. At that moment, he was no longer thinking.” Having concluded the findings, the Prosecutor’s Office ordered that the body be returned to the boy’s family.
