Delta variant in Italy: up to 32.6%. Alfa drops to 37.9%

by admin

The Delta variant of the coronavirus continues its run and in Italy it is now present in 32.6% of the sequences deposited in the international bank Gisaid, which collects the genetic sequences of the SarsCoV2 virus from all over the world. The Alfa variant, on the other hand, dropped to 37.9%.

The mutation of the virus traced for the first time in India last March is destined to become prevalent throughout Italy and, in August, also throughout Europe according to estimates by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control. On the other hand, this is already the case in 32 of the over 100 countries in which the Delta variant is present. Of these, in six (China, Lebanon, Nigeria, Jordan, North Macedonia and Kuwait) the Delta variant accounts for 100% of cases and in another 7 (United Kingdom, India, Israel, Singapore, Russia, Bangladesh, Indonesia) it exceeds 95% of cases.

From 6 to 9 July the Delta variant had increased in Italy from 27% to 30.9% of cases, while in the same period the Alfa had reduced from 44% to 42.8%. The engine of this race is in the same genetic characteristics of the Delta variant, which make it between 50% and 60% more contagious than the Alfa.

Among the regions, to have deposited the largest number of Delta variant sequences in the Gisaid database so far is Campania, with 282, followed by Lazio (199), Puglia (111) and at a distance from Veneto (80), Abruzzo (78) , Trentino Alto Adige (72) and Emilia Romagna (62).

It should be noted that these numbers do not reflect the real extent of the circulation of the Delta variant, but refer to the quantity of sequences obtained in each region.
