District Grieskirchen: Baler and field burned again

On a field between Michaelnbach and Unterreitbach (Grieskirchen district), a baling press caught fire around 2:30 p.m. while working on a field. The 34-year-old farmer noticed the smoke and, together with a worker, tried to extinguish the fire – in vain.

Neighbors rushed to help

The wind quickly spread the flames across the dry field. Seven fire brigades from the area moved in, alarm level two was declared. Neighboring farmers also came to the rescue with liquid manure barrels and cut a path around the area of the fire with a cultivator.

Technical defect as cause

The baling press fell victim to the flames, and around 500 square meters of field also burned. The cause of the fire may have been a technical defect, the police said on Monday afternoon. For the firefighters, the demanding operation was over after a good two and a half hours at well over 30 degrees.

Fire brigades in continuous operation

At the weekend, Upper Austria’s fire brigades were in constant use due to field and corridor fires. In the Mühlviertel, the highest alert level was even declared twice on Sunday afternoon.
