TREVISO. The new center for allogeneic bone marrow transplantation was inaugurated today at the Treviso hospital. The center, said the president of Veneto, Luca Zaia, was “strongly desired by the Region, it will be operational from next autumn with about thirty transplants a year. Patients from Treviso and Belluno will no longer have to emigrate to be treated ». It will be directed by Dr. Marta Stanzani, a specialist in Hematology with over twenty years of experience at the Allogenic Bone Marrow Transplant Center of the “Seragnoli” Institute of Hematology and Oncology of the University of Bologna. “Thus – she added – the hospital grows and the community grows, to the point of attracting luminaries of international fame. I refer to prof. Damiano Rondelli, one of the leading international experts in this complex therapeutic procedure. Director of the Division of Hematology / Oncology and Head of the Transplant Center of the University of Illinois, Rondelli – he explained – will monitor the development and growth of the new Treviso allogeneic bone marrow transplant unit for the first two years; it will also coordinate a training plan in Chicago for the doctors, nurses and biologists most involved in the transplant program, and finally, it will develop a training path through a continuous education program ». The allogeneic transplantation of bone marrow, or rather of hematopoietic stem cells, from a family or non-family donor, has for years been the therapeutic procedure of choice for the treatment of numerous oncohematological diseases (acute leukemia in primis, but also some forms of lymphoma, myeloma , myelofibrosis) and not (medullary aplasia, thalassemia, congenital diseases of the metabolism, severe immunodeficiencies).

In the five-year period 2016-2020, 80 patients were followed up at the Hematology Department of Treviso and residing in the Ulss 2: 54 underwent TMO outside the region, 26 in the Region (10 in Verona, 8 in Vicenza, 8 in Mestre). To these are added the patients from the Province of Belluno who, followed in Treviso as a hub center in the early stages of the disease, were subsequently referred to allogeneic OMT in other locations. «We are investing heavily in healthcare, – he concluded – where we perform 80 million services per year, which are worth 9.6 billion euros.
