The Interior Ministry’s “daily statistical dashboard” speaks for itself. Since the beginning of October, 1,430 foreigners have arrived in Italy in four days. The figure will go up continuously. The favorable weather, as long as there is, is a decisive factor. The political, social and economic crises in Libya and Tunisia add up as a powerful incentive for human traffickers. The issue has so far remained secondary in the political agendas of governments, in Italy restricted to the attacks of the former Minister of the Interior, Matteo Salvini, against the current owner, Luciana Lamorgese. But the unstoppable crescendo of landings, sooner or later, risks becoming a critical issue to be addressed as a priority.
Landings doubled compared to 2020
The same dashboard points out that 2021 arrivals amounted to 47,750, in practice double the 24,333 of last year. Tunisians in the lead among migrants
