A Polish archbishop accused of concealing child abuse has resigned. Pope Francis has accepted his resignation, the Vatican reported on Saturday.
Archbishop Andrzej Dziega of Szczecin in northwestern Poland is said to have known about the sexual abuse of minors by a priest since 1995, without taking action against it, according to a documentary by the Polish news channel TVN24. Statements from the diocese and the Vatican did not address these allegations, but Pope Francis has previously emphasized that abuse within the Roman Catholic Church is an important issue for him.
Clergy are required to report abuse unless it is reported during confession. Activists committed to victims’ rights believe this is insufficient.
