14th Sichuan Provincial People’s Congress opens in Chengdu
The second session of the 14th Sichuan Provincial People’s Congress commenced on January 22 in Chengdu, with a total of 860 delegates out of 880 expected attendees. The delegates gathered to fulfill their legal duties and contribute towards the Chinese-style modernization in Sichuan.
Wang Xiaohui, executive chairman of the presidium of the conference and executive chairman of the opening meeting, presided over the opening meeting. Huang Qiang, on behalf of the Provincial People’s Government, delivered a work report. Tian Xiangli, Chairman of the Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and Shi Xiaolin, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Secretary of the Chengdu Municipal Party Committee, also attended the meeting.
Huang Qiang’s work report focused on the achievements of 2023 and the goals for 2024. He emphasized that the year 2023 was the first to fully implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and lead Sichuan’s modernization drive with Chinese-style modernization. The province’s GDP exceeded 6 trillion yuan, an increase of 6%.
Furthermore, Huang Qiang outlined the main expected goals for the province’s economic and social development for 2024, such as regional GDP growth of about 6% and the creation of 850,000 new urban jobs. He stressed the importance of promoting the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing twin-city economic circle and deepening reforms in key areas, among other priorities.
The meeting also included the review of the province’s 2023 National Economic and Social Development Plan and the 2024 Draft Plan, as well as the report on the 2023 Budget Implementation and the 2024 Budget Draft.
The opening ceremony was attended by numerous officials, including members of the provincial party committee, the provincial court, and the provincial procuratorate, as well as leaders of the Standing Committee of the 13th Provincial People’s Congress and various other government departments.
The session expressed a strong commitment to driving the Chinese-style modernization of Sichuan and achieving the development goals for the region in 2024. Huang Qiang called upon all levels of government to work diligently and efficiently to fulfill their responsibilities and contribute to the overall progress and prosperity of the province.
The second session of the 14th Sichuan Provincial People’s Congress is expected to bring forward important legislative and policy decisions to guide the economic and social development of the region in the coming year.
