Last year, the World Food Program provided life-saving food to 1.6 million people in nine countries. This was made possible in part by the $32 million in donations received last year by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Today, a record 345 million people, of which 50 million are on the brink of famine, face serious food insecurity. WFP used Church funds to provide food and other critical assistance to the most vulnerable people, including mothers and young children, in nine countries: Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan the South and Yemen.
The Church’s partnership with WFP began in 2014. Former WFP Executive Director David Beasley saw the operations of the Church’s welfare program firsthand in Salt Lake City in 2019. The two organizations worked together to address to the lack of food during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“In this time of unprecedented global need, we are grateful for the unprecedented gift of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” WFP USA President and CEO Barron Segar said after last year’s donation. “Private sector support is critical to our mission, enabling WFP to scale up food assistance and resilience work that brings families stability and comfort in these challenging times. I am sure that the Church’s gift will inspire others to join our movement to end world hunger.”
