Starting tomorrow, the 24th, the Catholic Church begins the program that marks the last week of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week, with the celebration of Palm Sunday. The date is a reference to Jesus’ acclaimed entry into Jerusalem, days before his death and resurrection.

The JORNAL DE FATO report spoke with the rector of the Santa Teresinha Seminary, in Mossoró, Father Crisanto Borges, who spoke about the importance of Palm Sunday for the Church. He highlights that, from this Palm Sunday onwards, the Church begins to narrate the story of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“Palm Sunday introduces Holy Week and shows us that we have reached the last week of Lent. This last week is marked by two important moments, and the first of them is Palm Sunday, in which we have the blessing of the palms, the liturgy, the gospel, the procession to the Church, where, upon arriving there, the mass begins in which we have the narrative of the Lord’s passion”, he informs.

The parish priest also talks about the whole story that Palm Sunday brings about the life of Jesus. “It is on this Palm Sunday that Jesus enters Jerusalem to culminate his mission on earth. He will face the reaction of the authorities, the entire unfair process that is carried out against him, which will lead to death and then his resurrection”, says Father Crisanto Borges.

To celebrate the date, the Diocese of Mossoró carries out, this Sunday, the blessing and procession of the Palms. The gathering takes place at 8:15 am, at the Museum Square, in the center of Mossoró, and then there will be a small procession heading to the Santa Luzia Cathedral.

Upon arriving at the Cathedral, the celebration will continue, presided over by Bishop Dom Francisco de Sales. “On this day, we are invited to participate in the National Solidarity Collection, a Concrete Gesture of the Fraternity Campaign 2024, ‘Fraternity and Social Friendship’”, informs the Diocese of Mossoró.

Holy Week is a period of great importance and significance for the Church, as it marks Jesus’ last steps on earth. “On Sunday, starting with Palm Sunday, we will experience Holy Week which culminates with the celebration of the Lord’s Easter. Easter is the greatest Solemnity of the Catholic faith. It is prepared within a cycle that includes Lent and Holy Week. Holy Week takes place from the 24th, Palm Sunday, to March 31st, with Easter Sunday”, informs the Diocese.

The entire Holy Week program will feature parish celebrations, except for the Mass of the Holy Oils, when all priests will celebrate, together with Dom Francisco de Sales, Diocesan Bishop, the Mass of Unity, at the Cathedral of Santa Luzia, in Mossoró- RN. “Holy Week, for Catholic Christians, is not an annual tradition of mere precepts, but the experience of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ”, emphasized the Diocese.
