An “exponential increase” in adverse effects of aesthetic medicine has been reported in the Balearic Islands due to work intrusion, according to Dr. Marta Serna, president of the Balearic Aesthetic Medicine Association. This increase is attributed to the growing number of treatments by non-medical personnel, leading to complications such as necrosis, allergic reactions, and infections.
Dr. Serna emphasized that only doctors have the expertise to diagnose and treat these complications, urging citizens to avoid seeking treatments from unqualified individuals such as beauticians or nurses practicing ‘aesthetic medicine’. The consequences of receiving treatment from unqualified practitioners can include serious complications like cerebral embolisms, infections, burns, scarring, and even blindness.
To raise awareness about the risks associated with aesthetic treatments performed by intruders, the Spanish Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SEME) has launched the #NOsintumedico initiative. This initiative aims to educate the population about the importance of seeking medical treatments only from authorized medical centers and trained doctors.
The most commonly performed treatments by unauthorized individuals include lip augmentation, botulinum toxin injections, rhinoplasty, laser hair removal, and hyaluronic acid injections. Despite feeling a moral obligation to treat complications in patients who have received treatments from intruders, SEME recommends referring these cases to hospitals to avoid legal issues stemming from lack of information about the products and techniques used.
As the number of complications from aesthetic treatments continues to rise, it is crucial for patients to prioritize their safety and well-being by seeking treatment from qualified medical professionals.
