The urban regeneration program of Taverna del Ferro desired by the Administration led by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi enters the implementation phase.
This morning (2 February 2024), in the area adjacent to the public housing of San Giovanni a Teduccio, the construction site for the construction of the 360 new homes that will accommodate the families living in the two “blocks” built to cope with the housing emergency following the earthquake of 23 November 1980.
The first phase of the intervention concerns the area to the north of the current settlement where 84 garages will be demolished to make room for new low-rise buildings, self-sustaining in terms of energy, with urban gardens, new local services and spaces equipped for games and sports. Subsequently, once the first group of new houses has been completed, the families living in the building facing the sea will be transferred.
The latter will also be demolished to make room for another 180 homes in which those who live in the building on the Vesuvius side will live. Once the housing developments have been completed, the last building will also be demolished, in whose site area works serving the neighborhood will be carried out.
The urban regeneration program is implemented thanks to the resources of the Integrated Urban Plans, which fall within the “Inclusion and cohesion” mission of the PNRR, of the Complementary Fund which integrates the resources of the PNRR and of the PON Metro Plus Fund for a total of 106 million and 483 thousand euros. The new accommodation will be intended for families who live in the current settlement and who are assignees or occupants who registered during the census conducted by the Municipality.
“Today – commented the deputy mayor Lieto – there is emotion because this moment comes after two years of very intense work, even if it is only the beginning of that redevelopment process for which the inhabitants have fought. There is the whole meaning of work for us who work in institutions: to meet a complex question. The Municipality withstood this test very well from a technical and organizational as well as political and human point of view. The families of Taverna del Ferro will not be temporarily accommodated elsewhere: they will assist, naturally with some discomfort, at the construction of the new buildings but this is important for us and I believe it also matters for the community because we will have a civic observatory on the construction site”
