“New Voice” under the Five-Star Red Flag – Observations from Tibet’s celebrations of the anniversary of the liberation of one million serfs
Xinhua News Agency, Lhasa, March 28 – Today marks the 65th anniversary of Tibet’s democratic reform, and people from all over the snowy plateau came together to celebrate and commemorate this historic day. With activities such as raising the national flag and singing the national anthem, the spirit of unity and progress was evident throughout the region.
In Lhasa, more than 2,000 cadres and citizens from all ethnic backgrounds gathered at the Potala Palace Square for a flag-raising ceremony. The five-star red flag rose slowly amidst the sound of the national anthem, symbolizing the strength and unity of the Tibetan people.
One participant, 66-year-old Bianba, shared his story of transformation since the democratic reform. Formerly a migrant worker, Bianba now enjoys a monthly pension and secure medical care for himself and his family. His three children have prosperous careers, and he expressed gratitude for the improved quality of life brought about by the reforms.
The commemoration of this day also resonated in other regions such as Qamdo, Shigatse, Nyingchi, and Shannan. Witnessing the progress and development in his hometown, Gasong Zengpei, 79, expressed his appreciation for the government’s policies that have benefited the people. The region has experienced unprecedented growth, leading to a better quality of life for its residents.
In Gala Village, villagers celebrated the anniversary with traditional dances and cultural activities. The village, known for its eco-friendly rural tourism, has flourished in recent years, welcoming thousands of tourists and generating significant revenue. Villager Yang expressed gratitude for the improved living conditions and opportunities available to the younger generation.
In Shigatse, a series of cultural events and performances were held to mark the occasion. Tashi Norbu, a primary school teacher, praised the enhanced facilities and educational resources available to students. As Tibetan folk songs filled the air, Tashi joined the festivities by dancing the Guozhuang Dance with fellow citizens, celebrating the freedom and prosperity enjoyed by the community.
The progress and prosperity in Tibet are a result of the government’s focus on improving the livelihoods of its people. The Tibet Autonomous Region Government has allocated significant funds for various welfare programs, including medical insurance subsidies, living allowances for vulnerable groups, and support for grassroots initiatives. These efforts have contributed to the enhanced quality of life and opportunities available to the Tibetan people.
As Tibet continues to embrace progress and development, the spirit of unity and joy showcased in today’s celebrations reflects the resilience and optimism of the Tibetan people. The anniversary of the liberation of one million serfs serves as a reminder of the region’s journey towards prosperity and shared success.
