Ethiopia to Receive Temporary Protected Status Aid for 18 Months

The United States has announced that Ethiopia will now be eligible for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) aid for the next 18 months, starting from June 13, 2024, until December 12, 2025. This humanitarian aid is provided to countries facing extraordinary and temporary conditions, such as armed conflicts, that make it unsafe for their citizens to return home.

The decision to extend TPS to Ethiopia comes as a result of the ongoing armed conflict in the country, which has created unsafe conditions for its citizens. National Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas explained that the TPS designation for Ethiopia will allow individuals who entered the U.S. before April 11, 2024, to remain in the country safely until December 2025.

As part of the TPS designation, Ethiopian nationals in the U.S. will need to register or re-register for the program between April 15 and June 14. This aid is crucial for individuals who are unable to return to their home country due to the unstable conditions caused by the conflict.

Ethiopia joins other countries, such as Venezuela and Burma, in receiving TPS aid from the United States. The extension of TPS to Ethiopia underscores the U.S. government’s commitment to supporting countries and individuals facing humanitarian crises around the world.

The announcement of the TPS extension for Ethiopia highlights the global impact of conflicts and the importance of providing assistance to those in need during challenging times.
