Ramadan Fasting Intention Reading for a Day and a Full Month, Let’s Record!

Makassar

Muslims have entered the beginning of the month of Ramadhan 2024 on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. Fasting in this month must be preceded by reciting the intention.

Usually, Muslims read their fasting intentions in different patterns. There are those who read the intention to fast every day, there are also those who read the intention to fast for Ramadan for the whole month at the same time at the beginning of Ramadhan.

Citing NU Online, these two Ramadan fasting intention patterns are commonly practiced in Indonesia and are sourced from scholars from 4 schools of thought. For those who recite the intention of fasting at once for a whole month rely on the opinion of the scholars of the Malikiyyah sect, while 3 sects other than the Maliki sect make it obligatory to recite the intention every day.

So, what are the Ramadhan fasting intention readings like to read every day and to read for the whole month? The following is a complete description.

Read Daily Ramadhan Fasting Intentions

So, here is a reading about fasting intentions that can be read every day on the evening of Ramadan as quoted from the official website of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI):

I intend to fast tomorrow in order to fulfill the obligatory month of Ramadan this year for God Almighty.

Arab Latin: Nawaitu shauma ghadin ‘an ada’i fardhi syahri Ramadhana hadzihis sanati lillahi ta’ala.

It means: “I intend to fast tomorrow to fulfill the obligation of fasting in the month of Ramadan this year, for the sake of Allah Ta’ala.”

Full Month Fasting Intention Reading

As for the intention reading that can be read for a whole month, it is as follows:

I intended to fast the entire month of Ramadan this year as an obligation for God Almighty.

Arab Latin: Nawaitu shauma jami’i syahri ramadhani hadzihis sanati fardhan lillahi ta’ala.

Meaning: “I intend to fast throughout the month of Ramadan this year by following Imam Malik’s opinion, it is obligatory because of Allah Ta’ala.”

Laws and Recommendations of Fasting Intentions

Still from the same source, scholars from 4 schools of thought agree that the intention to fast is obligatory. However, there are differences of opinion among scholars regarding the technical implementation.

In Indonesia, which is predominantly of the Syafi’i school, it is obligatory to read and repeat the intention of fasting every day. Sheikh Sulaiman Al-Bujairimi in his work, Hasyiyatul Iqna’ explained,

It is required to fast during Ramadan or other days, such as making up for it or vowing to spend the night, which is making the intention at night, according to what the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: Whoever does not make the intention overnight before dawn, there is no fast for him. It is necessary to spend the night for each day due to the apparent meaning of the news

“It is required to make an intention at night for obligatory fasts such as Ramadan fasting, qadha fasting, or nadzar fasting. This is based on the hadith of the Prophet SAW, ‘Whoever does not make an intention at night before dawn, then there is no fasting for him.’ Therefore, it is necessary to intend to fast every day (in the month of Ramadan) if you see the redaction of the Zahir hadith.” (Sulaiman Al-Bujairimi, Hashiyatul Iqna’, vol. 2)

However, according to Maliki school of thought scholars, it is enough to read the intention to fast once at the beginning of Ramadan to intend it for the whole month and there is no need to repeat the intention every day. This is because fasting during Ramadan is a single worship service.

The intention of Ramadan fasting every day or a whole month, which is better?

The question arises, which is better to read your intention every day or intend to fast all at once for a whole month?

Answering this question, the Head of the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School, KH A Idris Marzuqi, in his work Sabil al-Huda said that Muslims should do both.

KH Idris said that reading your intention to fast for a whole month does not mean you don’t need to read your intention every day. The intention to fast for a month is intended as an anticipatory step if one day you forget to read your fasting intentions, so that your fast is still valid even if you don’t read your intentions.

“In order to ensure that the fast remains valid when one moment forgets the intention, preferably on the first day of Ramadan intend to follow Imam Malik who allows the intention of fasting Ramadan only at the beginning. And the existence of such a method does not mean that we no longer need to intention in every day, but it is enough only as a way out when you really forget,” explained KH Idris in the book Sabil al-Huda quoted from the NU Online website Sunday (10/3/2024).
