African heat relentlessly: Thursday over 38 degrees, Turin gives red stamp

Short thunderstorms are expected at the foot of the Alps. Experts: “Windows closed in the middle hours”

Still asphyxiating heat in the weather reports. The heatwave also continues in Canavese, where on Thursday the temperatures already above the average recorded in these days are expected to increase, reaching over 38 degrees in the lowland areas. The influence of African high pressure will therefore remain prevalent, despite infiltrations of humid Atlantic air may favor some stormy outbreaks in these hours.

Turin, from Thursday, will see the maximum level of alert with the red dot, a serious danger to human health, especially for more fragile subjects such as the elderly, children and citizens with pre-existing diseases. This was stated by the doctors of the Italian Society of Environmental Medicine (Sima), who sound the alarm about the repercussions of high temperatures on the human body.

«Excessive heat causes health problems – says president Sima, Alessandro Miani – because it can alter the body temperature regulation system. The human body cools down through sweating, but in certain environmental conditions this is not enough ». The doctors of Sima have issued a guide to defend oneself from the heat: among the published advice, an adequate exchange of air in the house, avoid going out in the hottest hours, close the windows during the central hours, take at least 3 liters of water during the day, avoiding alcohol. Finally, prefer foods that contain a lot of water, such as fruits and vegetables.
